I think they only want to track you. As you had to register to a shop, in order to make payments, some ID of that shop + some ID of you from that shop would be enough.
And if a book is only watermarked, but would leave me free to load it on all my devices and even format change it (so I can actually read it on all my devices), I'm a happy girl. Because that's the only reason I clean any book I buy that is infected with DRM.
