I believe I pointed it out that there are consequences if you violate those rules and are caught. If you run a red light and are caught you pay a fine and get points on your liscence. If you run a red light and hit another car you pay for the damage done to the other car, a fine for violating the law, and points. If you hurt someone while running a red light you can face even more serious criminal charges.
If I am asked by a fellow passanger or a Flight Attendent directly, I put away my e-reader and memorize the silly Skymall crap. If I were to refuse to do so I could be removed from the plane and potentially charged with a crime.
No one is saying that anarcy should reign, just that there are very few people who follow every law and rule to the T. There are some that are commonly broken, traffic rules are the best example, that there are reasonably minor punishments for and others that are far more serious. Murder.
In this case, people are chosing to use IPods, headsets, and e-readers after they have been told to turn off all electronics based on a large amount of evidence that points to using said devices as being safe.
