Another workaround is to set a highlight or note on the page before you jump. If you get 'lost', you can navigate back using the Contents panel. Then remove the highlight and continue.

Bookmarks don't work as well since they seem to mark the start of a 'logical' page, which often spans more than one 'physical' page.

But yes, the Back feature is not really well thought out. There's even an entirely separate Back feature if you use the page navigation control to jump.
