Although the gap is narrowing. For me, the inability to borrow library books in the UK kicked the Kindle right out of the running.

I don't think it is inevitable at all - e-ink occupies a niche in the market that can't be filled by tablet computers, smartphones or any other TFT/LCD/backlit screen, because it has the unique property of not needing a backlight and therefore allowing much longer periods of reading. I don't see why it should be killed off by other devices - I can see them existing quite happily side by side, like TV and radio.
