It doesn't surprise me to hear that your Kobo-owning friend is Canadian. There are more Kobo owners in the U.S. than in any other country, but maybe not for long: Kobo surpassed Amazon/Kindle in Canada about a year ago. In fact, unless I'm sorely mistaken, that makes Canada the only country on the planet where a competitor has launched after the Kindle, yet surpassed the Kindle devices in marketshare. When you read the Kobo section of the forums here and look up the profiles of the contributors, huge numbers of them are Canadian. Of course, it helps the competition that Amazon's e-book store is smaller elsewhere, and that new devices take their sweet time showing up outside the U.S. One of these days Amazon will realise that this is hurting them.
