Have you tried something like the Amelia Peabody books by Elizabeth Peters? Those are considered Romance and as far as I recall all the sex takes place off page.

I've read many Nora Roberts novels that I enjoy but oddly, I've never been able to get into the JD Robb books. I've tried several times and I always quit reading.
