No proof, of course, other than handing and using the different devices, but I've always thought that durability and overall ruggedness took a sharp nose-dive after the second generation Kindle. For whatever reason, the stories of units needing to be returned (sometimes multiple returns) for various reasons rose sharply with the release of the K3. That could be because there was just so many more sold though. The newer Kindles may be more aesthetically pleasing, but they just feel a lot less durable to me. *shrug*
Perhaps the newer Pearl screen is more fragile? I know I've bounced my K2 off the floor several times with no disasters (not that I don't recommend handling them delicately).
