The Military, at least the U.S. military, doesn't like initials in names. They say it confuses things. So if you happen to have an initial for your first name or middle name, you have to add (only) after it. I don't have a middle name, only a middle initial so my military records read Stitchawl I(only) Jones... sort of.
In the case of R. B. Jones, he went through his entire military career known as Ronly Bonly Jones, and was called that by all!
(Most likely not true, but I think most folks in the Military have heard the story.)
