For my money, the best-designed TabletPC was practically the first, the Compaq TC1000/1100:

It hit all the right beats from a desktop docking station to a detachable keyboard to a folio-style locking carry case. The Crusoe CPU in the TC1000 was underpowered but adequate in a NetBook kinda way, and the overall design and functionality hasn't been replicated anywhere since.

They literally don't build them as they used to.
I do have some hope that somebody (HP?) will stuff ultrabook tech and an iPad-ish monster battery into a reincarnated TC1000. (Wouldn't even mind if they keep the thickness; the weight was manageable.)
I really think the consumer tablet space is finally ready for broad adoption of TabletPC tech, even if the idea is ten years old.
