Yeah, well I knew Kris Kristofferson wrote it as Bobby McGee being female, but thought maybe a change is sex had been in order for when Joplin had the big hit with it. Or then again maybe not . . .

I was actually the opposite. I really only started listening to music and paying much attention to it as a teenager. For me then it was strictly rock 'n roll, gradually moving back to encompass bands from before my time. I really only expanded my musical knowledge and tastes once I enter college.
I would never have been able to name that tune by The Clash, but I do recall them from hits they had on MTV in the 1980s.
