It would probably be tough to do if the author were dealing with a Big 6 publisher, but for someone doing self-publishing, it seems to me that it would just be a matter of putting a sentence on the last page of the book: "If you got a copy of this book for free, from a friend or off the internet, and liked it enough to read it all the way to here on the last page, you can tip the author at <insert web page>" where you will also find other books available for purchase."
