Things may not get a lot simpler any time soon.

I've played with this a lot.
At my desk I have my Nook docked to my back-powered USB.
About the house and elsewhere I use it alone or with a USB keyboard or a footswitch for scrolling.

As things stand right now, there is a random element to getting this to work immediately every time you plug in.
You may plug things in and it works immediately or you may have to fumble with settings and retry.

The problem is that the driver has a very difficult job figuring out what is plugged into the USB jack.
There may eventually be improvements in the driver from verygreen or others, but right now, it is what it is.

Without rooting the Nook, a keyboard doesn't have much utility.
If you can handle a bit of fumbling, install the verygreen mod and a host mode app.
