I do find it amusing, though, that many people think it's safe to sneer at certain types of erotica as something only dreadful people enjoy reading. A good many surveys indicate that many, many Americans have at least one "kink", and it seems to be across demographics. ('Course, the hardcore Christian crowd call it "wife spanking" instead of "bondage".)

There's a bit in "How Not To Write A Novel" that specifically advises not to try to shorthand "villain" via a kink because a majority of your readers are going to be personally insulted. So, yeah, best not to be all EROTICA? WE SELL GEORGE ORWELL AND NOTHING ELSE! in your public communications. /lessons learned.
