In my opinion the Fire was rushed to market in order to not miss the Holiday shopping season, that's why it is essentially a clone of the Blackberry Playbook rather than a clean sheet design.
It wouldn't surprise me at all to see it replaced with a new design as well as a larger model in the relatively short term. I suspect the new model will be substantially revised to better reflect Amazon's design philosophy. I'd love to see it offer expandability vis SD Card which would make it a much better international travel companion, but given the removal of that from the newer Kindle's I'm not holding my breath
