I think you mean the backlighting. This can be dimmed when you are reading in a dark environment, to reduce the discomfort, but yes, it can be a problem. In my case I think I have gotten used to it, but I have the lighting set to a rather low setting, and sometimes at night I have to reduce it even more. But if I remember to lower the lighting, the discomfort goes away.

If you have problems with reading on a screen, I would suggest you try to borrow an iPad and try it for a while, if you can. You can't judge from someone else's experience, everybody is different in how we use the device and how we react physically and mentally to the backlit screen. You must try it for yourself.
