A lot of stores (Walmart and Home Depot come to mind) use self service checkouts that scan barcodes and can accept cash or credit.

Oh, God. I've tried that crap at a couple of grocery stores. I hate self check out. Where my $%&$ discount for doing someone else's job?? Hate it and hardly use it.
And the whole thing of walking around the grocery store with my own bags and a freaking scanner drives me INSANE. Here I am, looking like booby the fool, juggling a shopping list and a hand held scanner. AND for extra credit I get to bag my own stuff??! (and still no discounts) Pfft! Pffffffft I say!
