It was rather quick and seamless, no standing in line. My only concern is that they didn't put screen protectors/cases on the iPads. I'm sure they'll be a flurry of broken iPads soon enough.

Seems primative and labor intense. For a long time, I've been hearing that stores would use RFID to permit self checkout -- walk out of the store, swipe your card, and you're done. It was said that the shopping cart would keep a running total while shopping. A lot of stores (Walmart and Home Depot come to mind) use self service checkouts that scan barcodes and can accept cash or credit.
