Clearly, you need a larger purse!

Actually, my new just barely sub-500 16 gig wifi iPad fits very nicely into my manbag, which is one of those 7x10 leather jobbies with lots of manly zippers and heavy metal hardware demonstrating clearly that THIS IS NOT A PURSE but rather, some kind of dangerous weapon holster that might even be illegal in certain states, but comes free with your hat & boots in Texas.

My iPad will never shatter until it does, either. I didn't buy the Apple Care, but was told it now covers accidental damage. I have decided not to become engaged in accidental behavior, though I do not rule out inadvertent actions while handling bourbon.

Truth is, the iPad is rather small for a large device. But I agree, what we (meaning "I") need now from Apple is one that is rather large for a small device. We need a PocketPad, or, in your case, a PursePad.

Harking back to the OP, I have no idea whether the iPad has sold out. I had no trouble buying one last Saturday at an Apple Store. I would venture to say that Apple is not interested in Selling Out - rather, they are interested in Selling More. If the online Apple Store has sold out, all that might mean is that they allocated more units to their brick & mortar outlets, which include non-Apple vendors who undoubtedly grasped for as many iPads as they could get.

The thing that strikes me is that we have now entered the hand-me-down era of iPad marketing. I suspect that lots of kids, spouses, and siblings are coming into possession of used iPads.

I think that this might mean that Apple is crowding out its competition by occupying the low end market that lower cost tablets might otherwise sell to, and also moving into the mid-cost range with the continued sale of the 16 gig iPad2. So we have the upper end of the market occupied by The New iPad, the midrange occuppied by Last Year's iPad, and the lower end by The Handmedown iPad - which, incidentally, seems to be reselling for just a little bit more than the price of a Kindle Fire or Nook Color.

Unfortunately, if I am right about this, it seems to me to mean that Apple will not make a PursePad, since that would cannibalize the low end demand, thereby reducing the high end demand, which is where the profit margin is.
