a) The 1 million is just an estimate (guess), not an actual sales number
b) It was over the opening weekend, not the first day

That's actually quite different to "The iPad2 sold out 1 million in the first day"

The first three days of iPad 3 sales were Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
That sort of sounds like an opening weekend. And they sold 3 million of them.
