Laptops have become standard use in college. Is there some reason to think their flexible power is not useful in lower grades? I think we sell our children short if that approach to learning doesn't eventually make its way into grade school.

I'm not sure if tablets are the right answer but they do have a nice portable form factor. The length of essays and complxity of other content creation is significantly less in the lower grades so perhaps an on-screen keyboard is sufficient there. What they don't have, yet, is enough durability. Devices for kids have to be kid-proof.
