I read the book a few years ago and enjoyed it immensely. Although the threat of nuclear annihilation isn't at the forefront of thought anymore, I still can't help but think of the book whenever I hear politicians spew anti-science rhetoric or impliedly describe the educated as snobs; it always reminds me of the Simplification from the book.
