I thought the x50 is exactly what Sony needed to make, but it was way overpriced compared to Kindle and Nook. I don't think it was that they cost too much to make. If Sony makes something like x50 but price it a a premium (but not overpriced) they can make a niche for themselves.
Kindle, Kobo, Nook are all making me-too ereaders. If Sony comes out a lead in technology (like they did with a touch reader two years before the rest), Sony can do well in the market. I can't imagine Kindle, Nook or Kobo coming out with a high resolution e-ink reader or large screen reader, basically technologies to drive the ereaders forward.
