I tested the Amazon epub-to-mobi conversion when I was uploading my book. This was about 3 weeks ago, I think, so not very long ago. The Calibre conversion was far superior because it handled the images more delicately.

I'm guessing that the Amazon conversion isn't creating KF8 files at the moment. My two cents, based on personal experience.
