You're underestimating the upsell in Apple Retail Stores. If I wasn't there, my aunt would've paid $100 extra to get the iPhone 4 32GB and $230 extra to get the iPad WiFi+3G 32GB which the
sales guy, sorry, Apple Genius was convincing her to get. Given her usage, she's fine with the base models (iPhone 4 16GB and iPad Wi-Fi 16GB).
Yes, consumers have a choice but as in the case with most non-techie folks buying desktops and laptops at the local big box retailer, they're usually easily influenced by sales people.
