I think we saw something similar with the iPhone 4S. The websites were on back-order but there were actually stock in retail stores lasting past the weekend of release. I guess there are less people willing to wait in line when they could just sit comfortably at home and have the device shipped to them.

I reckon the availability of the iPad 2 at a lower price point has also hurt 3rd gen iPad sales.
