Seems to me a confirm: Triton needs outdoors lighting to express its potential, in colour and definition.
With direct, or very bright sunlight it will surely result better than Vizplex or standard Pearls, because the strong grey does not harm the eyes by reflecting all the light. The same happened with my Asus dr900.
Medium and low light kill it. Medium light weakens most of the colours. Low light makes it way less readable than Pearl. I'm speaking for my eyes, not for everyone.
Two notes:
I meant the kind of light you find in bedrooms, when you read before sleeping. Usually it's a very warm one.
Did you keep the ipad on low-brightness? Outside you should use it with the highest settings
