Pierre Loti (pseudonym of Louis Marie-Julien Vaud) 1850-1923.
Egypt [La Morte de Philae] (1908)
Translated from the French by W P Baines
A travel book. The novelist Pierre loti visited Egypt in 1907 and this is his account of the trip. He is very sympathetic to Islam and generally hostile to the British, who were the colonial power. The book culminates with a description of the temple of Isis on the island of Philae, which was regularly submerged after the British built the Aswan dam.
(The temple complex has now been saved and moved to another island.)
