I'll chime in as a fan of PKD.

I was first introduced to his work about 15 years ago by a book of his short stories that a coworker lent me. I've since tried reading some of his novels, but it's his short stories that really get me. What I like about them is that almost all of them set up some sort of ethical dilemma that has no obvious solution, and then it leaves it there. He doesn't hand you a pat answer, he doesn't try to solve the dilemma for you, instead he leaves you thinking about what you would do and whether the actions of the characters was the best given the circumstances.

In other words, I spend more time thinking about the story than reading the story!
