The new low cost mini laptops are certainly an option (and not just eee - plenty of others are entering the fray over the next few months) - however - I think that e-ink is worth considering by anyone who is spending long hours reading high volumes of dense material for study. Some of us (not saying everyone ... ) find e-ink significantly easier on the eyes.

iLiad battery life might not be as good as the Sony or Gen3 - but I've used it for 7 hour stretches (with a bit of annotating on the wacom along the way) without a problem.
