The epicenter of Fire hacking has to be the xda-developers.com forums. Head on over there, go to the kindle fire general forum, and there are threads on the popular rooting methods.
For me the hardest part was getting the USB driver for adb working since I had already plugged my Fire in and used it as a USB drive. So I had to figure out how to get it to switch over to the correct driver. It's actually easier under linux.
