I expected to want to do some heavy modifications on my Fire, but I ended up liking it a lot as-is.
The one thing I did want to root for was to be able to install the Android Market. I subsequently realized that rooting would let me install the Google Calendar sync adapter and let the google calendar app (and pocket informant) sync with my google calendar.
I've installed a couple other root-necessary apps, like droidwall and titanium backup, but I don't really consider them all that essential right now.
One downside of relying on root is that of course the next Amazon update will un-root you and you'll have to re-do it. Every time this has happened the smart people have figured out how to re-root in fairly short order, but there still is that need for the sure way to block future updates (this is why I grabbed droidwall, but it would be nice to know for sure what needed to be blocked).
