Android tablets in the 10" class already had higher resolution before the iPad's retina display. Most are technically high def since the definition for high def is just 720p (1280x720) or higher.

As for digital magazines, comics, etc, a lot of those already have higher resolution. That's why zooming in on comics work. The pixels are already there. If they weren't, then this isn't exactly NCIS where you can magically generate details that aren't in the original. If the originals were only 1024x768, you'll just get a blurry blown-up image or some big squares (depending on the resampling algorithm) when you zoom in.
