If the original .doc produces A4 pages and you want to keep the same pages, then converting to PDF and viewing on the iLiad is currently your only real choice.
If instead you just want the same text, but "reflowed" to pages that work on the small screen, then saving it as a rtf and viewing it on a PRS-505 will work well. You can also view the rtf on the iLiad using FBReader (with some loss of formatting). Or convert the .rtf/.doc to MOBI (e.g. using MobiPocket Windows Reader) and view it on the iLiad. The PRS-505 won't show images in .rtf's, but the .rtf can be converted to .lrf to preserve images.
You can try FBReader with .rtf and MobiPocket Reader with converted .rtf on any Windows computer - just change the window size to about 768x1024 pixels (or a bit smaller) to be like the iLiad screen (the size on the screen will probably be bigger than on the iLiad, but it will show you how much text is typically on the screen). You may also be able to preview PRS-505 files on a Windows machine, but I don't know the details of how to do this.
