The main reason for most people is to install Android Market (now Google Player), then you can unroot.
Amazon app store is nice--I use both--but much much smaller than Market. You really miss a lot by not having market.
Aside from access to more apps, it means that if you have an Android phone, you can install apps you purchased for the phone.
