1) VLC did release. I tried it, it was crap, I deleted. Soon after, they pulled it and havent ever updated since then.

2) "Real" video players? There are dozens of them. I use oPlayer on my phone and CineXplayer on iPad (when I have one, I'm between at the moment). I mostly have avis to play and both these manage really well.
