How do they compare stability-wise? I believe that both Pocketbook and Onyx have had issues with bugs in their firmware. Is one significantly more stable than the other?

I'd suggest that you also consider a tablet for reading PDFs. Both the iPad and Android tablets are excellent choices for reading and annotating PDFs.
