You are welcome to use your tablet and/or ereader any way you like. It's just a bit ridiculous to suggest that anyone who has different priorities for their device has "crippled" it. A tablet is a computer, and computers do more and other things than access the internet. Personally, the only notifications I receive on my tablet are app updates. I find no need to receive notifications in stereo from both my phone and my tablet. If I want to respond on my tablet, it's easy enough to jump into the appropriate app.
