I'm 30% through my FLP copy of series book one (Red to Black), and it's a wonderful mesh of strong characterizations with a realistic ripped-from-the-headlines plot.

Before the real-life fall of Communism, I read of boatload of fiction and non-fiction about the USSR/Russia. That ended when Russia stopped seeming so central to the world's future. This book brings back all my interest by making a strong claim for its subject's importance without (at least so far) resorting to implausibilities.
