I know it's no help now but the first thing I do with any book I get, freebie or not, is import into Calibre and remove the DRM, and my Calibre database is backed up nightly to a NAS. Probably not a bad routine to adopt in future.

I don't think it's a good idea to be dependent on anyone's cloud.
