With the anthologies of shorter stories, it's important to distinguish between the electronic Gazettes (which are just as you describe them), the Ring of Fire anthologies (which are longer stories by established writers and may well introduce important plot points, and should be read in the recommended order) and the paper Gazettes (currently I through VI) which also include a short story from Eric Flint. Even if someone doesn't want to read the massive number of Gazettes, I would recommend reading the stories in the paper copies of the Gazettes (or, confusingly, in the electronic versions of the paper copies of the Gazettes!*)

* the electronic Gazettes have arabic numbers, the paper ones have roman numbers.
