It depends on the device. Some devices allow you to be format indifferent by allowing you to install multiple readers, so you can read one book on your Kindle app, the next one on the B&N app, the next one on the Apple app, the next one on the Kobo app, etc. Others are just easier if you strip the DRM and convert everything to the native format.
