Short of looking up how to install an earlier firmware (1.9.14 being the last without the advertising), there is nothing to be done. And even if you do revert to the better, earlier firmware, you still only get 5 covers shown on the homescreen.
Since I got lucky and heard what was in 1.9.16 before it was pushed, I am still at the far superior 1.9.14 and have not left "airplane mode" (why they just don't call it "wi-fi off" is beyond me) or connected it to the desktop software since then to keep it from updating. Kobo no longer gets my business. I shall never buy another book and certainly never a new e-reader after the 1.9.16 advertising and the VERY shoddy Vox. Either a 16GB PlayBook (1GB RAM, 1GHz dual-core, 16GB) or a Lenovo IdeaPad A1 (512MB RAM, 1GHz single-core, 16GB storage; my brother's with the Navy and they determined that the IdeaPad was best Android for the sub-$250 price range and he's had no problems with his. 'Tis a LOT snappier than the sluggish Vox) for the same $199 price tag.
