Actually, if you read farther into the now-merged RedFlagDeals forum thread linked in the OP, it's been clarified by someone who spoke with one of the Sony MNBA reps near the end of the thread that it can be any 5 purchases (no bill payments, though) and that all the readers will be the black model, and that they won't be mailing any of them out until the promotion officially ends on May 31st.
Mind you, how accurate that particular info is may be up for dispute, but checking the fine print on the agreement, there isn't any particular specification that the 5 qualifying purchases have to be made for Sony products in the Sony store. Perhaps they may have originally intended it that way, but from the looks of the RFD thread, probably got enough protest that they changed it if so.
