Running the aforementioned off an sd card does not affect the nook firmware at all. You do not even boot to the to the emmc on the Nook, it runs strictly from the card. If you want to run the stock Nook software, just hold down the "N" when you turn it on and you have a choice to boot CM or Nook ROM.
I do not want to get into an argument with you, I am just explaining how I made the Nook Color into a great tablet. The ROM makes the difference. CM7 is vastly superior to the stock Color ROM. When they (XDA, CyanogenMod) can make it work on the Tablet, then the Tablet's better hardware will win out.
Right now, however, it is very easy to make the Color rock!
