Hard resetting still works fine for me (keep holding power button until device powers off and restarts) for the times when my device becomes unresponsive.
I installed 5.1 and while it has been only a couple of days, it 'feels' more stable. Battery seems not to drain as fast. I could be imagining all of this of course.

But after a couple of days of no crashes, the Kobo app crashed this morning for no reason. It had been launched several minutes prior to this so any apps that might have been doing something in the background had plenty of time to shut down and release resources (and in this case, I'm pretty confident that none were in fact running. So who knows why it happened.

Again, I don't recall having issues like this prior to 5.x. But no doubt iPod Touch has the lowest priority in terms of testing and fixing things, as the most resource constrained devices running iOS, and therefore the most challenging to develop for.
