I know this is off topic :-) But let me clarify.
Is it Spanish your 1st language? I can tell you for sure, here in USA we do not use "Spanish" as a way to refer to people from Latin countries, we say Latin people, at least that's the case in TX. Which means, people from Honduras, Nicaragua, PR, Salvador, Colombia, etc, we refer to them as Latins, not Spanish.
Actually, we also use Hispanic, because I believe Hispanic and Latino are synonyms.
It is really common, even for american people (including my wife, born and raised in USA) to use Latin expression and word instead of Spanish.
Now, your analogy for Latin rhythms does not perfectly fit here. Because Latin People is usually refer to people from Latino America. But Latin Music can be Salsa, but with English Lyric.
