AUS$400 won't get you an iLiad - however - Dymocks sell iLiads, and it's posible to have a look at one in some of their stores. You might find this useful in terms of seeing what an e-ink display looks like, and understanding about screen sizes (most of the other e-reading devices have significantly smaller screens). iLiad is good for annotation, and for reading pdfs (smaller screens are generally not so great for reading pdfs)
I looked at the iLiad before buying at a Dymocks store at 234 Collins St Melbourne (not sure if their other Melbourne stores have one on site). The dymocks website says that you can look at the iLiad at the Sydney George St store.
