Selective Output Formats for Different Devices?

Hi Everyone,

I recently discovered Calibre, but already REALLY benefit from its usefulness.

Here is my issue:
~I have two ebook readers, Kindle and iPad(2)
~The supported formats for these devices are different, mobi vs epub
~I would like different periodicals to be downloaded in different formats and automatically sent to my respective devices

To be specific, I like to read The Economist and The New Yorker on my kindle (mobi), but prefer to read National Geographic and other magazines that contain images on my iPad.

When setting up Calibre, I indicated that Kindle was my primary device, so the default format is set to mobi. Magazines are scheduled to download once per week. I have automatic delivery set to send these news items to my kindle email address.

Ideally, I would like to
a) automatically have The Economist and The New Yorker downloaded in mobi format, but National Geographic downloaded in epub format [subquestion: if I download a magazine in mobi format, then convert to epub for viewing on ipad, does it retain the same viewing/functionality as it would had I downloaded it directly as epub?]
b) have Economist/New Yorker auto delivered to kindle, but National Geographic sent to my gmail to be opened with iBooks

Thanks in advance for the help!
