Have you been reading about Warner Bros going after people using the publically available Wizard of OZ story to sell their own products? Apparently Warner is re-releasing OZ in 2014 and wants all the tie in merchandise to flow through their own channels. It cannot of course, unless Warner successfully lobbies copyright for perpetual retroactive copyright with specific clauses for those who have the most "rights" to a specific work.
Apparently someone is also trying to trademark the characters from Tarzan.
