It sorta looks like this process is related to the network access, since I lose connection when I kill it:
978 root 0:00 wpa_supplicant -s -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -C /var/run/wpa_supplicant -B
but running that command doesn't seem to be sufficient to enabling wifi access.
